BRIAN PRIESTLEY
WHO KNOWS? - The Uncovered Ellington
This album by Brian Priestley includes 15 mostly less well known pieces by Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn, and takes its title from one of them.
Chronologically, they go from the last Sacred Concert in 1973 (My Love) all the way back to Duke's second-ever composition from c.1915, called What Are You Gonna Do (When the Bed Breaks Down)? As to their familiarity, the range is from the early 1940s' After All and Johnny Come Lately to the mysterious and unrecorded 1960s' East East by East, which might or might not have been intended as part of the 'Far East Suite.'
Recorded in July and October 2003, with sponsorship from DESUK, the programme includes solo, trio, quartet and quintet tracks featuring the leader (piano, arrangements) with Simon Wolfe (double bass), Steve Brown (drums), Frank Griffith (tenor sax, clarinet) and Bruce Adams (trumpet, flugel).
The CD is available at the following prices, including carriage worldwide.
